Calling 311 vs 911

Typically, people call the police because they are experiencing or perceive an emergency and need immediate assistance. 311 is an alternative resource for issues that do not require immediate assistance such as housing issues, public safety and sanitation concerns (i.e street light out, trash, recycling and bulk), noise complaints, and other non-emergency concerns.
